UNL Soil Judging Team Places Third at the Region Five Soil Judging Contest

The UNL Soil Judging Team sloshed its way through the Region 5 Soil Judging Contest in Columbia, Missouri, Oct. 12-16. It has been very wet in central Missouri. The rain continued throughout the week of the contest. UNL students Heather Achterberg, Laura Achterberg, Samantha Bray, Tyler Christianson, Sam Ingram, Lindy Rauscher, Christine Ritta, and Laura Stevens participated in mud up to their knees. The UNL team placed third in the group judging portion of the contest, just one point behind the second place team from Missouri State University. A one point difference out of a possible 1020 points is as close as it can get. Considering the conditions, it is a miracle that the teams were able to compete as well as they did. Check out the photos of this year’s contest.

Soil Judging is an intercollegiate competition sponsored nationally by the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America. UNL competes in the North Central Region with the University of Minnesota, Kansas State University, Iowa State University, Missouri State University, North Dakota State, Northwest Missouri State University, South Dakota State, and the University of Missouri.

The 2010 Region 5 soil judging contest will be held in the North Platte Nebraska area next October. The UNL team hopes that it will drier next year. If you are interested in the UNL Soil Judging Team contact Mark Kuzila at mkuzila@unl.edu.
