Mission

Educational (all levels), eco-tourism (sandhill crane migration), wildlife habitat.

Location

On the Platte River near Gibbon, Buffalo County. To get to the office, go south on Lowell Rd off the Gibbon Exit (I-80) for two miles, then west on Elm Island Rd. for 2 miles. Please call ahead if you need staff help to access property. 308-468-5282 Map Overview About 1200 acres, almost 3 miles of river channel. Major ecosystems besides the river channel include mixed grass prairie, hay and grazing meadows, wood lots (primary species are cottonwood, green ash, mulberry), wetlands, small stream, CRP (primarily weed and wildlife plants) and ag lands. Flat.

Research

No direct research done by staff. Several projects involving purple loosestrife control, sediment transport and long term physical river characteristics currently underway. No publications.

Institutional Affiliation

The National Audubon Society owns and manages the sanctuary. We have complete control over access. There are some easements on properties close to Rowe which are not open to the public - but those will not be shown as sanctuary land on any maps.
