Sunil Narumalani has been the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) since 2009. Some of Sunil's responsibilities include Achievement-Centered Education implementation, curriculum issues, distance education, new student enrollment, the CAS Advising Center and recruitment. Sunil continues to hold a 25 percent appointment as a professor in the School of Natural Resources - Faculty of Geography/GISciences. He is also a Faculty Associate at the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT).

Sunil Narumalani

His research interests are in land use/land cover interpretation, change detection studies, homeland security and defense-related applications of remote sensing and GIS.

Specific projects he has worked on include the development of a UNL campus-wide GIS for regular daily operations and security, integrated natural resources management for the Nebraska National Guard and mapping of invasive species at select national parks. In addition, he has been involved with several colleagues at CALMIT toward providing geospatial technology training and support to the U.S. military's efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Past research includes the mapping of agroecozones (agriculturally dominated ecological zones) of Nebraska for the USDA, biological diversity studies along the Platte River for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and land use change detection studies for the National Park Service.

Sunil received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of South Carolina in 1993 and has been with UNL since then. He teaches courses in remote sensing (digital image analysis) and advanced geographic information systems. His research focuses on the use of remote sensing for the extraction of biophysical information from space and airborne systems, integration of geospatial data sets for ecological and natural resources mapping and monitoring, and the development of new image-processing analyses techniques for information extraction.
