My name is Bryce Erb and I am a senior at the University of Nebraska Lincoln and will be graduating with a BS in Fisheries and Wildlife. My option is Law Enforcement and I will earn a minor in Criminal Justice. I was able to obtain an internship with the Ness County Sheriff's Department in Ness City, Kansas.
This internship took place during the summer of 2011 and during this time I logged 120 hours of officer observation. Many of the hours logged were ride a-longs with the deputies during their routine patrol throughout Ness County. Other activities included sitting in on county and city court room proceedings, traffic stops, executing civil standbys, serving civil process, and going on calls from dispatch. On the last day of my internship I set in on a tazer recertification class during which I was given the chance to get some hands on training experience with the X26 tazers.
The whole internship was a great opportunity and will be a great help when I am looking for jobs in the future. I found the internship with the sheriff's department to be very fulfilling and I would recommend an internship like this to anyone that is pursuing a career as a Law Enforcement. Professional, it really lets you get a feel for what a day on the job would fell like if that's what you choose to do after graduating.
I have a great respect for the Ness County Sheriff's Department and all law enforcement because of the experience I gained from my three week internship this summer. I would like to end by giving a special thanks to Sheriff Bryan Whipple for the opportunity and a big thank you to the rest of his officers and staff for making the internship an exciting and worthwhile learning experience.
