Hi, I'm Steven W. Huber from Columbus, Nebraska, and I'm pursuing a minor in fisheries and wildlife.
I became interested in the School of Natural Resources because I wanted to make a career change. UNL was within driving distance of my job in David City and the wildlife program was well recommended.
In getting my first degree at UNL, a bachelor's in general agriculture in 1982, I strayed from my passion – wildlife. But I do believe having that degree will give me a wider, more interdisciplinary background than only having a wildlife degree. I have been employed by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) for 20 years as a soil conservationist.
I am pursuing a minor because the classes I need to qualify for federal jobs as a wildlife biologist were also enough to get me a minor in the School in fisheries and wildlife. I felt it would take me too long to get a major.
As one might imagine, the wildlife courses have been my favorites, and guidance from Dr. Larkin Powell, an SNR wildlife professor, has been instrumental in my "retraining."
When I graduate, I plan to start my second career, but with a federal wildlife agency.
