My name is Ben Schiltz and I am a Grassland Ecology and Management major at UNL. I had the great opportunity to intern with the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition (NGLC) for the summers of 2010 and 2011. My position with the coalition was that of Range Technician for eastern Nebraska as part of the Rangeland Monitoring Program. I was responsible for conducting site visits with private land owners throughout eastern Nebraska and aiding them in setting up rangeland monitoring sites.
This internship was valuable in that it helped me gain experience working with a diverse group of people including land owners, NRCS employees and NGLC board members. I also became very adept at judging the skill level of producers so as to help tailor my visit and what I was teaching to be useful to them. Overall I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to intern with the NGLC these past two summers and the skills and experience I gained are invaluable to my education. The experience of working with landowners is one that can never be replicated in the classroom.
