GIScience

Geographic Information Science (GISci), is an area of endeavor that encompasses the use of technologies such as satellite remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), the global positioning system (GPS) and computer cartography to better understand and manage earth’s environment, natural resources, land use and human societies. GISci is one of the fastest growing fields for geographers. For over 35 years, the UNL Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) has been a leader in GISci research. Research on GISci applications in natural hazard assessment is also conducted by geographers in the SNR National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC). UNL was a founding member of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS).
