Archeological Investigations at Hopeton Earthworks National Historic Landmark

LuAnn Wandsnider
Dept of Anthropology and Geography
University of
Nebraska

Abstract:  Archeological investigations at the Hopeton Earthworks are designed to collect information relating to three general questions:  when were the earthworks built, how and why were they built, and how were they used?  2004 represents the fourth season of study and will include excavation of two trenches across earthen walls, continued excavation of prehistoric structure #1, and excavation of test pits to evaluate anomalies revealed by magnetic survey.  The study will be a cooperative project between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Department of Anthropology and Geography and the Midwest Archeological Center, National Park Service.  The field investigations will incorporate on-going NPS investigations at this site with teaching students basing archaeological field methods through a formal university field school.  The study will be conducted at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.
