Homestead Oral History
Project
Dr. Kenneth Winkle
Department of History
University of Nebraska
Abstract: History to provide oral history project
assistance via graduate students and professors helping with
and leading research, interviews, transcriptions, and
documentation. Homestead National Monument of
America's enabling legislation calls for preservation of
homesteading history, including the personal hardships of
pioneer life. Preserving oral histories are a vital
component of this mandate. Oral histories are a vital
research resource and interpretive/education tool. The
Monument's current collection does not include many oral
histories. A combination of professionals from the NPS
and the University will work together to research, design,
implement, and document these histories. The personal
histories will become part of the Monument's collection and
available to the public, as well as provide for exhibits and
programs at the Monument. The histories and related
information will be valuable for scholars, including other
University projects and programs.
