Oral History Transcription Project for Effigy Mounds National Monument

Mark C. Daniels
Department of American Indian Studies
University of South Dakota

Abstract:  As part of ongoing management of this park, the NPS needs to expand the known information about groups associated with the resources of EFMO.  Information is needed specifically about the associations American Indians have with and ascribe to the park and general broader landscape.  Their stories have not been recorded.  This information is critical to a balanced educational and interpretive story for the park, and for culturally sensitive resource management.  The objective of the study is to develop a documented basis of knowledge from which park managers can anticipate resource management issues, possible interpretive material, and educational information that can be presented to the public.  This study will be based primarily on oral history interviews.  NPS project manager and PI for this project is Ms. Michelle L. Watson.  The University of South Dakota Oral History Center is responsible for all draft and final documents and all deliverables related to this transcription project.
