Abstract:
Miscanthus has been identified as an
invasive, non-native plant that threatens the natural resources
in
Rock
Creek Park
,
DC
,
and has begun to threaten Prince William Forest Park (PRWI), VA,
George
Washington Memorial Parkway,
VA
,
and National Capital Parks-East, DC-MD.
Previous control effort by the National Capital
Region’s Exotic Plant Management Team at PRWI was
unsuccessful. This
project is part of Dr. Meyer’s sabbatical study of Miscanthus
species. Dr. Meyer
will come to NCR for a reconnaissance visit during the fall.
She will meet with the park managers and draft a scope of
work (including Time Line, Deliverables, and Payment Schedule)
for FY03. It will
identify the cultivars that are spreading, map the extent of
infestation, identify recommended control methods for this
invasive, non-native plant, and to distribute this information
to other parks, neighbors, and nurseries.
NPS will be directly involved in planning, discussing
park objectives and monitoring goals essential to the monitoring
program for vital park resources.
This project is a part of Sabbatical in the Parks funded
through the NCR’s Urban Ecology Learning Alliance (UELA).
