Peter Kulakow
Department of Agronomy
Kansas State University

Abstract:  Complete associated information for plant sciences known to be utilized for phytoremediation and revegetation through a cooperative effort with Kansas State University-Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center and the USDA NRCS National Plant Data Center (NPDC).  The records will be used by the NPDC to augment a plant characteristics data set the PLANTS Database <http://plants.usds.gov>.  The project tasks include the following:  Prepare discussion of role of phytoremediation (and the five methods: phytodegradation, phytoextraction (hyperaccumulation), phytovolatilization, phytostabilization, or rhizofiltration) in agriculture, natural resources conservation, and ecological restoration for use at the PLANTS Web site.  For each contaminant group, discuss assessment methodology on 1-2 page per contaminant group.  Prepare discussion of revegetation on disturbed sites.  Integrate principal plant species used for revegetation.  Parse reference information into separate data fields.  Complete population of the following fields: Synopsis, study type, application, capability, and media.  For at least the top 25 plant species, produce a 1 to 2-page electronic fact sheet comparable to those found on the PLANTS Web site.
