Repair, Scan and Distribute via Web Manuscripts on Early Nebraska Archeology in MWAC Library

Dr. Patricia Draper
Department of Anthropology
University of Nebraska

Abstract: This project will be undertaken to preserve original manuscripts in the Midwest Archeology Center Library relating to early Nebraska archeology. Treatments will include repair of bindings, archival storage of originals, replacement or repair of torn pages, artwork or maps, or preservation through protective covers. The project will also include work with the Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS) to identify documents not in their collections. All early and threatened documents relating to Nebraska archeology will be scanned by a NSHS employee using their scanning equipment as an in-kind contribution to the project. In return, MWAC will make archival copies of the documents, store the original manuscripts, and provide equipment for putting scanned documents on CD. Archival paper copies will also be provided to the NSHS. The Nebraska Association of Professional Archeologists (NAPA) has also agreed to produce a CD of Early Archeology in Nebraska of the scanned manuscripts for distribution to members of NAPA, local museums and libraries, and Nebraska’s National Parks. NSHS, NAPA personnel, and the UNL intern will work together to determine which manuscripts should be included in the CD. Work with the manuscripts and CDs at MWAC will be completed through a cooperative agreement with the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, who will provide student personnel from the archeology or museum studies program to complete the work. Work in the Center Library will be overseen by the Archeological Information Management Team Leader at MWAC. The combined efforts of this project will result in the preservation of these important materials as well as increasing their dissemination to the public and Nebraska archeologists for educational and research purposes. The intern position will provide the opportunity for a student at the University of Nebraska to gain hands on experience dealing with archival materials, methods for determining the significance of report documents, and making documents available through digital technology.
