Translate and Publish the Journal of Prince Maximilian's Expedition to North America

Charles Rankin
Editor-in-Chief, University of Oklahoma Press
University of Oklahoma

Abstract:   The Joslyn Art Museum, the University of Oklahoma Press, and Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site and partners are collaborating to translate and publish the complete manuscript journal of Prince Maximilian of Wied’s expedition to North America from 1832 to 1834.  This journal is by far the most significant un-published resource that documents the cultural and natural history of the upper Missouri River in the early stages of the influence of European civilization.

The journal will appear in 3 Volumes. Volume I is scheduled for publication in November 2007, Volume II in the fall of 2008, and Volume III in the summer of 2010.  Fort Union will support the translation and publication of Volume I.  This process includes the work of two translators and one person to annotate the work of the translators.  The work of the translators and annotator are to be reviewed by a Board of Advisors who are professional historians.  The Board of Advisors will also provide modern footnotes and amplification of the text, with information that has been discovered since the journal was first written.  It is expected that Volume I will be 500-600 pages in length and include approximately 150 drawings.
