Abstract:
The waterfalls along the designated scenic section of the
Niobrara
River
are a favorite
of visiting tourists. Photos
of the waterfalls, particularly
Smith
Falls
, can be found
in many publications. Parts
of their charm is the result of the geometry being convex
downstream which is unique for waterfalls.
This geometry defies current dogma on how waterfalls form
and develop. The
determination of the type of physical process that form
waterfalls of this geometry will provide for better management
and protection of the waterfalls in this area as well as
contribute to understanding the scientific theories of erosion
and waterfall development. Over
a 2-year period, the study will determine the basic geologic and
hydrogeologic settings in which the waterfalls are developed
combining field and laboratory studies
.
