Karst Aquifer Effect on Stream Discharge Variation in the Jacks Fork River Basin in the Ozark Highlands

Q. Steven Hu
School of Natural Resource Sciences
University of Nebraska

Abstract: In a recently completed study, a hydrology-vegetation model was applied to the Jacks Fork river basin in the Ozark Highlands to examine basin discharge variations in relation to climate and landcover changes. To increase confidence in the results of the model before applying it in practice to guide decision making, greater understanding of the karst aquifer is needed. In this study, the hydrology-vegetation model will be modified to evaluate the relationship of discharge, climate, and landcover in the Jacks Fork basin. The expected outcome of this study will include an improved hydrologic model that is able to describe karst aquifer effect on ground hydrology and cross-basin flows and their effect on surface hydrology and river discharge. It will provide understanding of groundwater effect on the stream discharge responses to landcover and climate change in the Ozark Highlands.
