Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata)
  Nonpoisonous

Description: Color highly variable, those found in Nebraska were dark brown with faint grayish dorsal stripes. Belly is bright red or orange-red.

Habitat: Open woodland areas.

Size: 20-25 cm (8-10 in).

Diet: Slugs, snails and earthworms.

Natural History: This is one of the rarest snake know in Nebraska.

Similar species:

  1. Brown Snake has white not red belly. Also lacks pale spots on the neck at the base of the head that are found in Redbelly Snake.
