Western Worm Snake (Carphophis vermis)

Description: Small, attractive snake that is dark above with pink-red sides and belly. Smooth, shiny scales have almost iridescent quality. Look for distinctive color pattern of black above and pink-red below in this tiny snake.

Habitat: Rocky hillsides in open woodlands.

Diet: Earthworms.

Size: Typical adult length: 19-28 cm (7.5-11 in) Maximum: 15 inches (Collins & Collins 1993).

Natural History: This small snake normally remains hidden, however a study in Kansas found 150-300 individuals per acre. This snake is normally below ground and not seen out in the open. Most likely to be found in April with mild temperatures and moist soils by turning stones or logs.
