identification points and similar species:
Very similar to Smooth Softshell, but Smooth Softshell lacks dark markings on feet. Its shell is also smooth not like sandpaper. Description: Leathery shell with bumps and spines; typically has numerous black circles or spots; feet strongly patterned. Habitat: Rivers, streams, and lakes; not found in northwest corner of state. Size: Females 18-43 cm (7-17 in); Males 12.5-23.5 cm (5-9.25 in) Diet: Insects, fish and amphibians. Natural History: When handled, this turtle will bite! |
