Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applying is a 2-part application process.

Eligibility: Must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

1. Apply for IGERT support to conduct IGERT-related research:

  • Contact a member of the IGERT Coordinating Committee regarding your interest in submitting an application.
  • Students must submit a letter of intent, include research interest(s) through the Web site to Dr. Craig Allen. Also include three letters of reference, GREs and transcripts.
  • The student's faculty advisor must also submit a letter of intent which includes a commitment to support IGERT pedagogy and participate in the IGERT program and from the home department to support the student in his/her Ph.D. program. Faculty may want to review the Advising, Co-advising and Collaboration document.
  • Candidates may be nominated by any appropriate UNL faculty member willing to advise a student or by the Steering Committee. Outstanding candidates who meet basic criteria will be invited for a campus interview.
  • First-generation college students and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

2. Apply to a Ph.D. degree program:

Trainees may enter the IGERT with either a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. Trainees must meet IGERT program requirements, as well as the regular requirements of the department that awards the Ph.D. degree.

APPLICATION REVIEW

Submissions will be reviewed beginning January 15, 2012 for August 2012 enrollment. Review of applications will continue until the available positions have been filled.

Assistantships will be awarded to the most highly qualified individuals, as selected by the ISC. Offers will be contingent upon on a written commitment from the faculty advisor to support IGERT pedagogy and participate in the IGERT program and from the home department to support the student in his/her Ph.D. program.

Candidate Selection

IGERT Trainees will be selected from a multi-department pool of qualified applicants and will be evaluated by the IGERT Steering Committee (ISC). Evaluation will be based on:

  • academic performance,
  • quality of prior research experiences,
  • publications, communication skills,
  • potential to conduct interdisciplinary research and
  • potential to enhance the program’s intellectual, gender, and ethnic diversity.
