March 29 Weather Symposium to Help Ravaged Town Rebuild

Lincoln, Neb. -- A fund drive to help the town of Greensburg, Kansas, which was devastated by a tornado in May 2007, will be part of the Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium, March 29. The Symposium and family WeatherFest is an all-day event, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., in Hardin Hall, on the northeast corner of 33rd and Holdrege streets in Lincoln.

"Storms of 2007,” a DVD that includes the Greensburg disaster, will be showing in room 901 throughout the day. The DVD will be on sale in the lobby of Hardin Hall, with proceeds going to Greensburg. Two Kansas University students will also be on hand, exhibiting photos taken both aerially and at ground-level in the aftermath of the disaster.

Proceeds will go to Greensburg GreenTown (http://www.greensburggreentown.org/), a non-profit organization devoted to helping residents rebuild.

Speakers at the Symposium talking about the Greensburg tornado include Mike Umscheid of the Dodge City, National Weather Service, and Joe Schaefer, Director of the Storm Prediction Center. Umscheid was the lead forecaster the night of the tornado, and did everything in his power to handle the disaster as it unfolded.

Note to media: Umscheid and Schaefer will be available to the media for interviews the day of the CPSWS.
