Duane A. Eversoll

Hi, I’m Duane Eversoll, research geologist in the School of Natural Resources.

My work in geology has multiple applications. In Nebraska, I provide expertise to landowners searching for suitable areas to drill water wells. I also assist the water well industry in designing and creating safe water wells that protect groundwater aquifers.

Urban planners often seek out geologists to evaluate landslide hazards. My work in this area culminates in maps that detail potential landslide areas. City planners and managers use these to avoid placing homes and business in risk-prone places. In particular, I have worked with the Nebraska Department of Roads on landslides that affect their roadways and properties. I also advise rural residents and businesses about landslide threats on their properties.

In addition to these projects, I provide geological education in the state. For example, I lead geological field trips for the state’s natural resource districts, the Nebraska Water Well Drillers and other groups. Among other benefits, they provide continuing education credits required by law. Eight trips reaching all areas in Nebraska are available. I also work with the Onsite Waste Water Task Force, which disseminates information to the general public and its primary audience in the septic-system industry.

I am also currently working on county geologic maps for southwestern Nebraska, an area I mapped with the U.S. Geological Survey and published cooperatively with them, the Geologic Bedrock Map of the McCook 1:250,000 Quadrangle – an area 1 degree in latitude by 2 degrees longitude near McCook.

I am presently president of the national Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG), an organization dedicated to uniform registration and qualification of geologists across state and national boundaries, and have been associated with the ASBOG Council of Examiners since 1994.

In addition, I am president of the Nebraska AgRelations Council. I belong to the Geological Society of America and have chaired its Engineering Geology Division. I also belong to the Association of Engineering Geologists, the Association Institute of Professional Geologists and am a charter member and past president of the Nebraska Geological Society.

I have been at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for 30 years. I earned a bachelor’s and master’s in geology from UNL.
