From Earth to Sky and Everything In Between

Steven L. Hartung

Hi, I’m Steve Hartung, and I’m a research soil scientist with the Conservation and Survey Division of the School of Natural Resources.

My main research interests and activities have been in soil classification and interpretation. Currently, I’ve been spending most of my time working on a statewide digitized soil map made of the digitized county soil surveys.

Up until the last few years, I worked for 25 years on the state county-by-county soil surveys. While the modern, or post-World War II, surveys were completed for all counties by 1995, field soil scientists continued to update some of the older surveys. Updating is needed because of scientific advances that yield better information, changes in land use and the needs of computer mapping, among other reasons.

The two main outreach projects I’ve been involved with include Earth Wellness Days, sponsored every spring by Southeast Community College, and Husker Harvest Days, the agricultural exposition held every year in mid-September in Grand Island.
