Sunil Narumalani
Hello, I’m Sunil Narumalani, a Professor in the School of Natural Resources. I’ve been at UNL since 1993.
I received a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Bombay, India, in 1981, a second Master’s in Geography from the University of Georgia in 1989, and my Ph.D. in Geography from the University of South Carolina in 1993.
I am associated with the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) and SNR’s GIS and remote sensing graduate specializations. I also hold a Graduate Faculty appointment in the Department of Geography. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses including Digital Image Analysis (GEOG 420/820) and Advanced Geographic Information Systems (GEOG 422/822).
My main research interests are in land use/land cover interpretation, change detection studies, homeland security and defense-related applications of remote sensing and GIS. Specific projects I’m working on include the development of a UNL campus-wide GIS for regular daily operations and security, integrated natural resources management for the Nebraska National Guard and mapping of invasive species at select national parks. In addition, I have been involved with several colleagues at CALMIT toward providing geospatial technology training and support to our military’s efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Recent past research includes the mapping of agroecozones (agriculturally dominated ecological zones) of Nebraska for the USDA, biological diversity studies along the Platte River for the US Fish and Wildlife, and land use change detection studies for the National Park Service.
