Larkin A. Powell

Hi, I’m Larkin Powell, associate professor of conservation biology and animal ecology at the School of Natural Resources.

I teach courses in the school’s fisheries and wildlife major and am associated with the wildlife ecology graduate specialization. I am developing a research lab for students interested in pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. degree.

My areas of study and research attempt to explain how our management of landscapes affects bird populations and how we might improve population trends through the management of landscapes. The discipline is becoming highly quantitative through the use of spatial statistics and modeling with geospatial information sciences (GIS). There also is more emphasis on populations within landscapes.

I’m currently involved in the implementation of GIS in the school’s curriculum. I’m also working on research projects involving Sandhills grazing and bird community ecology, landscape effects on bird nest predation, productivity and movement in Nebraska’s Rainwater Basin and the use of managed and mature hardwood stands by wood thrushes in the Atchafalaya Basin of Louisiana.

I have also studied the natal dispersal of wood thrushes at the University of Dubuque; nuisance geese on Georgia golf courses; and peregrine falcon survival, dispersal and habitat use following a reintroduction in the Upper Mississippi Valley.

I have a bachelor’s degree from Graceland University in Iowa, a master’s degree in ecology and evolutionary biology from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Georgia. Since 2001, I’ve been at UNL, where I’m a faculty fellow at the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) and a fellow at the Center for Great Plains Studies. I’m also an affiliate faculty member at the University of Dubuque in Iowa.
