From Earth to Sky and Everything In Between

Daniel D. Snow

Hi, my name is Dan Snow and I’m a research assistant professor in the School of Natural Resources and Laboratory Services Director of the UNL Water Sciences Laboratory.

I study environmental analytical chemistry. In particular, my work at the laboratory deals with analysis of water contaminants and stable isotopes.

Several researchers and scientists tackle the problem of water pollution. My niche in this ever-expanding discipline is creating analytical methods for emerging environmental contaminants like antibiotics, explosives, pharmaceuticals and the products of pesticide degradation. My goal is to improve our understanding of the impacts of the use of synthetic organics to the environment and water quality. I help develop new analytical methods to measure contaminants and their transformation products, and apply these methods for research on the environmental fate of these compounds. The results of this research will help assess the occurrence and environmental fate of these compounds and their potential for impacting living organisms. I conduct related research on remediation (cleanup) of contamination, measurement of microbial respiration, and the use of stable and radioactive isotopes as tracers in environmental systems.

In addition to these projects, I also assist extension educators, producers and others involved with agriculture with questions about water quality, water treatment and water testing. For example, I have hosted educational programs for Nebraska’s natural resource districts and well drillers.

These types of educational endeavors reach the general public when I lead tours of the Water Sciences lab and give guest lectures in classes. I am also helping to teach a lab class in Environmental Chemistry.

My education began at Southwest Missouri State University where I earned a bachelor’s in geology. I then received a master’s from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, both in geochemistry. I have worked for UNL since 1990.
