Steven W. Ress
Hi, I am Steve Ress. I have been the Communications Associate and now Communications Coordinator at the UNL Water Center since 1996, having come into the UNL system from a 15-year background of newspaper reporting and editing in Nebraska and California.
Most of my work at the Water Center revolves around publicizing and promoting research work and extension/outreach programming conducted under Water Center sponsorship. I do this through brochures, press releases, writing for a variety of newsletters and academic magazines, several internet sites, helping draft proposals, coordinating conferences, seminars and tours, attending events and through other venues. I assist SNR communicators with similar tasks for the School. I am a member of the School’s Outreach Committee and served on the School’s Implementation Committee.
Active and reserve service in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy was a parallel career for me for a little more than 30 years, until my retirement from the Naval Reserve in January, 2003 as a Captain in the ordinance and maintenance field. I received my officer’s commission from UNL’s Navy ROTC unit in 1978, along with Bachelor of Science degrees in both Journalism and Political Science. During my years of Naval service, I had the privilege of serving on nearly every continent and on all but one of the “Seven Seas.” Germany (where I can speak the language passably well), Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands were my favorites. I also served in Vietnam and through the Persian Gulf War.
I am a Lincoln native and attended Southeast High School. I have been married to the same wonderful woman and lived in the same old house in Lincoln’s Bethany area for 20 years. Jennie and I have 13 and 16-year-old daughters and sons ages 28 and 30, along with six grandchildren…..all of which keeps us fairly busy.
In my copious spare time I enjoy tinkering with antique cars, reading, hunting and shooting sports, old movies, Nebraska football, traveling and walking.
