Trevor Schmidt
Hi, I’m Trevor Schmidt and I’m a freshman fisheries and wildlife major in the School of Natural Resources.
I grew up on a farm near Henderson, where we grow corn and soybeans. I’ve always liked hunting and fishing and working with animals. I hunted with my dad and brother and with friends growing up. I’ve also participated in 4-H and FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America), being involved in natural resource activities such as land judging.
My choice of major was a good one. I’ve been really impressed with the professors in the School. They interact with you on a one-to-one level and encourage the students to get help if they need it. I’ve also been involved with the UNL Wildlife Club, with which I’ve helped teach hunter education classes. It’s a good way to help out hunters, as well as rural and urban residents. That’s been very rewarding. I’ve also attended the club’s meetings and have benefited from the speakers we’ve brought in.
This spring I’ll be going to the U.S. Forest Service Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota with a group of SNR students and professors, and during the summer, I’ll be helping on the family farm.
When I graduate, I’d like to work as a game warden, perhaps with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission or a similar agency in another state.
