Coordinated Cosmic-Ray Observation System (CCROS)
Monday 14 October to Wednesday 16 October 2024
Conference Goal
The overarching objective of the Coordinated Cosmic-Ray Observation System (CCROS) conference is to assess the wealth of scientific opportunities presented by ground-based neutron monitoring across both low and high-energy spectrums. Furthermore, this conference represents a pioneering effort to unite diverse scientific disciplines, including hydrology, atmospheric science, and space weather. The conference will encourage intensive discussion with the goal of identifying how these fields can collectively benefit from future investments in a coordinated global neutron monitoring network, marking a pivotal moment in interdisciplinary collaboration.
Conference Output
A collaborative concept paper will be produced focusing on the forthcoming science questions and evolution of detector and network design within our joint communities. This comprehensive document will be made publicly available through archives online and the conference website and will be formally submitted to the National Science Foundation for consideration.
In addition to the concept paper, we plan to distill the conference’s key findings and insights into a succinct summary article to be submitted for publication in the American Geophysical Union weekly newsletter Eos Buzz. This approach ensures that our research and recommendations reach a wider audience, fostering broader awareness and engagement within the scientific community.
This concept paper will complement and expand the existing efforts of the National Soil Moisture Network initiative, the NASA Decadal Survey, the Space Weather Decadal Survey, and address 2 US laws (National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) Reauthorization Act of 2018, Public Law (P.L.) 115-423 and Senate bill, S. Rept. 116-171, 2020, Space Weather Research And Forecasting Act) on the need for improved ground monitoring networks.
