Bicycling

BRAN on the roadEver since the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, I have been an avid bicycler. I don't race. I don't tackle the trails on a mountain bike. But I do commute and tour.

On my first day in Nebraska when I moved here in 1983, I was watching the news and BRAN 3 was just completing its trek across the state. I said I wanted to try that one day. I joined the Cornhusker Marching Band a couple of months later. Cindy, one of my fellow tenor sax players said she wanted to do BRAN too. The next year, both of us and 500 other hearty souls spent 7 days traveling from west to east over 500 miles. As of 2006, I have complete 10 trips across the state. Its got to be one of the best ways to see the state....any state for that matter. And not only do you get to see the state, you get to meet fascinating, warm and friendly people. Not to mention great food. Save me a piece of that sour cream raisin pie at the Calloway Senior Center. View my BRAN History.

Bicycling near Chimney RockAND COMMUTING. Its not far to work. It's a mind set. It takes a little planning to have clothes ready to go. And I only fill up the gas tank of the car about once a month. Any of you could do it. The only thing I wish Lincoln, NE would become more like Madison WI or Austin TX with more bicycle lanes. But we do have a great trail system in and out of the city.
