Safety Training

To be sure you are in compliance with regulatory requirements, refer to the EHS Virtual Manual and EHS Safe Operating Procedures.

The goal of safety training is to provide all employees with an understanding of safety regulations, policies, guidelines, and procedures related to their work. The level of training needed by each employee will depend on their individual duties and responsibilities. Employees and their supervisors together should assess the level of training needed beyond core training at least once a year as part of the annual employee evaluation process. SNR considers the needs assessment an addendum to the job description, and must be completed when the employee begins the position and then reviewed/updated annually.  See the Employee Training Needs Assessment Form.

Most safety training will be through Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), while some will be arranged by the employee’s supervisor, safety managers, the Safety and Facilities Committee, or the Director’s Office. Training completion will be documented using class attendance rosters and web forms that, at the end of web-based training, are to be printed, completed by the employee, and provided to the supervisor and the Director’s Office.

Core training is required for all university employees (defined here as any person who receives a pay check from the university.)  The training is divided into two parts that are all offered online at http://ehs.unl.edu/onlinetraining/ . SNR requires employees to re-certify UNL Core training every 5 years.

  • Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (approximately 30 minutes)
  • Emergency Response and Fire Safety (approximately 40 minutes)

In addition, all university employees and students who work in laboratories and/or work with chemicals must also undergo hazardous materials training, which includes the following:

  • Chemical Waste Management (approximately 30 minutes) - instructor led
  • Chemical Safety Training (approximately 60 minutes)

May be taken as required by the employee's supervisor.

  • Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogens (approximately 60 minutes)

For information on core training customized for and provided in your area, contact Elizabeth (Betsy) Howe, ehowe2@unl.edu, (402) 472-5488.

In addition to the minimum formal training mandated by applicable regulation and provided by EHS, additional training topics are applicable based unique department, task, or employee needs.  Work/task-specific training must be conducted by the supervisor.
