My Story

Hi, I'm Michael Hayes. I am an Applied Climatologist and a professor in the School of Natural Resources. I arrived at University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995 when I began work as climate impacts specialist for the National Drought Mitigation Center. Between 2007 and October 2016, I was the director of the NDMC. At the moment, I teach one class called Climate and Society. The objective of this class is for students to understand the effects of climate variability and extreme climate events on human activities and how human activities impact climate and natural resources management. I am part of the newly formed Applied Climate and Spatial Science Mission Area within SNR, and I am getting more involved with the undergraduate degree program that will have this same name.

My main research interests are drought risk management, disaster management, drought planning, impact and vulnerability assessments, climate variability and change, extreme events, and adaptation strategies. I am involved in a variety of research projects collaborating with the NDMC, other climate faculty at the university, and with researchers around the world. Another major component of my position deals with providing outreach on these drought- and climate-related issues to a wide variety of officials, decision-makers, and policymakers at local, tribal, state, national and international scales.
