My Story
Hi there! I am Grace Campbell and received my master's degree in Natural Resource Sciences with a specialization in Bio-Atmospheric Interactions. I am originally from Kentucky and went to Western Kentucky University to get my B.S. in Meteorology. I also minored in Agriculture and got a certificate in GIS.
During my time here, I will be working with the National Drought Mitigation Center (NDMC) as a research assistant. I want to focus my work and thesis on how climate and weather impact crops and farming practices, and how we can mitigate these impacts as weather gets more variable and the global population continues to rise. In my professional career, I want to be a consulting agrometeorologist.
I have some research experience in the climate sciences as well. During undergrad, I was a member of the Mahurin Honors College at WKU and wrote an undergraduate honors thesis over how drought in the Great Plains, including Nebraska, is affected by teleconnections in the Pacific and Atlantic Basins. I also interned remotely with the High Plains Regional Climate Center here at UNL over my senior year at WKU. During my time, I created a soil temperature climatology for the northern and central Plains using Python and ArcGIS Pro. The maps can be found on the HPRCC website here! (https://hprcc.unl.edu/maps.php?map=SoilTemp) After finishing the maps, my teammates and I wrote a manuscript and submitted it for review in the Journal of Applied and Service Climatology.
Aside from school, I love to read, especially classic literature. I also love being outside and gardening. I have a new-found interest in rock tumbling as well, which makes the geologist wanna-be inside me very happy! After I graduated from WKU in May 2021, I went storm chasing with a small group of other WKU meteorology students and one of our professors, and I saw my first tornado in the process!
We drove almost 8000 miles and through 8 different states, which brings my total state count to 23. I've been to 9 different countries as well. I love to travel if you couldn't tell!
