My Story
My name is Rheece May, and I serve as the Coordinator for Habitat Management and Prescribed Fire Education at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Natural Resources. In this role, I contribute to the restoration and stewardship of the University’s prairie properties and assist with the coordination and delivery of prescribed fire education and training. My work integrates field-based ecological management with student engagement, focusing on improving ecosystem health while supporting the educational mission of SNR.
I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from UNL with dual majors in Fisheries and Wildlife and Regional and Community Forestry, and minors in Water Science and Environmental Science, awarded in May 2025. My academic and professional interests center around prairie restoration, fire ecology, and the application of land management practices that promote biodiversity, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
I was born and raised in Bellevue, Nebraska, where I developed a deep appreciation for the natural world through activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and wood carving. My father’s service in the U.S. Air Force brought our family to Bellevue when he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base, and that environment instilled in me a strong sense of place and responsibility. My decision to pursue a career in natural resources stems from both a lifelong passion for the outdoors and a desire to conserve and enhance the landscapes that provide so much value to our communities.
What excites me most about this position is the opportunity to not only improve the ecological condition of the University’s prairie lands, but also to support the training and development of future conservationists. I believe strongly in the value of hands-on education and collaborative stewardship.
In addition to my professional work, I enjoy traditional crafts and working with my hands. My personal interests include metalworking (ornamental iron and blade making), wood carving, and leatherwork. All activities that allow me to stay connected to craftsmanship and creativity.
