My Story

Hello! My name is Iris McFarlin and I am the Communications Specialist for the Applied Wildlife Ecology & Spatial Movement (AWESM) Lab within the School of Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In this role, it is my job to find creative ways to share our lab's cutting-edge research with stakeholders across the country and help connect people to nature.

I grew up in the Midwest and attended Iowa State University where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Ecology. During and after my undergraduate schooling, I held a variety of different positions within my field including work in wildlife rehabilitation, environmental consulting, apiculture, and human dimensions. I then went on to earn a Master's degree in Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and upon graduating, joined the AWESM lab as their communications specialist.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband and our two dogs. We enjoy getting outside to hike, camp, or just lay in a hammock. I love reading, exploring new food scenes, and photography. I also enjoy traveling when I can and hope to visit many, many places.
