My Story

Hi, I'm Jinsheng You, a research assistant geoscientist working with hydrology and climate in the UNL School of Natural Resources. I work in the fields of hydrological modeling, quality control of weather data and weather data management and soil water interactions.

As my fields of interest indicate, a good deal of my work involves the analysis of hydrologic systems from atmosphere to groundwater aquifers. Water is one of the world's most valuable and vulnerable resources, which makes the study of water increasingly important. The understanding of the processes of water circulation in the hydrologic system is vital for the conservation and management of water resources.

To better understand how water flows, both monitoring and computer modeling were conducted in my research. One of my research interests is in the data quality control, which is an important aspect for applications in hydrological and climatic modeling. The accurate measurements help develop computer models to better simulate the water flow from rainfall to the shallow vadose zone, and then to deeper groundwater aquifers.

My research also includes studying the land use change to the water flow in soils. The land use changes from grass cover to irrigated cropland lead to changes of water flow processes in soil. The aquifer under the irrigation wells may also be recharged faster than the grassland because of the higher water content of soils under the irrigated crops. To explore this possibility, monitoring under irrigated crops and under rainfed grass was conducted. Models were applied to simulate these scenarios.

I have been at UNL since 2003. In recent years, I have cooperated with a number of universities in China such as Hohai University and Southeast University.
